Preikestolen which is also called pulpit rock in English is a very popular tourist attraction which also is the number one hiking icon which has more than 200,00 visitors each year. It is a beautiful and easy way of getting there and getting rewarded with a beautiful view over lysefjord. 

In 2015 Lonely Planet ranked preikestolen as the number 1 best viewing platforms in the world, where over 300,000 people from all over the world hiked up preikestolen. For us to be able to understand how the preikestolen was formed we got to understand how the fjord itself was formed. Many million years ago the lysefjord the view of preikestolen was just a river such as all other rivers with an old plain landscape. Throughout its time of existence it was slowly curved out and transformed into its current u-shape. According to the stories is preikestolen discovered as something which can be a view platform in 1896 when the bank manager Thomas Peter Randfull from Stavanger cruise lysefjord aboard the steamboat oscar ll. Where he saw a striking rock which now is the famous preikestolen.


The first tourist that ever visited what is now called preikestolen was in the early 1900s. Which then they thought was a hard and difficult hike up. In 1920 the Stavanger hiking association embellished 3 rooms at Vatne Farm so that people were able to overnight there. Later in 1925 the neighbors Tornes farm became a tourist station and this continued until 1960. There were reported almost 100 guests yearly visiting preikestolen. The chains between Vantage and preikestolen were marked, and it turned out that the numbers of hikers increased gradually.  The word preikestolen means The Norwegian name Preikestolen consists of two words: “Preike” and “stol”. “Preike” means ‘to preach’, and “stol” means ‘chair’. So, translated literally, Preikestolen means ‘Preacher’s Chair’. (preikestolen 2018)




Preikestolen has been so popular that some of the most action-filled of the latest movie of mission impossible scenes has been recorded at preikestolen. Will it every fall down?a question many people have asked and wondered. It has been something famous for many ,many years. And people hiking up there have noticed crack crossing on top of preikestolen. Remember that when hiking up there you need to be careful when going close to the edge as you should when going close to any dangerous cliffs. In order to not spoil the beautiful view of preikestolen until this day not to put fences around the edge to make sure there is safety for people to feel more safe.  Because of this everyone needs to make sure that they hold their kids or animals or whoever that is in the risk of eventually falling down from the edge. 

How to get to preikestolen from stavanger. 

The hike to the top of preikestolen is around 3,8km each way. Where you can either hike up the edge of the preikestolen and will usually take around. Or the normal hike which is the most popular one which can take about 1-4 hours. Depending on traffic or how fast a person hikes up. To get to preikestolen from oslo. You drive for roughly 7 hours. Or you take the train, and from there the drive is over 6 hours. There is also a daily flight between Oslo and Stavanger which would cost more, but you get there rufly 45 minutes.  If you already live in Stavanger or take the trip to preikestolen from Stavanger you can either go by bus or boat, you can slo take a car if that is a preference. The ideal way of traveling is by boat, there is a boat going everyday departing pulpit cruise, which takes around one and a half hours and requires to take the ferry between Lauvik and oanes which apsses høgsfjord as you see on the picture below.





Recommendations for hike:

  • Change of clothes, it can be very cold on the top of the hill due to norway has quick changes in weather. ((trekking shoes and rain geair are advised  for most hikes in Norway)

  • Food and drink that you can eat before, during and after. The trip itself will take approximately 4 hours up, and then mostly people stay up there for an hour. Around 2 hours down. 

Best time to go to preikestolen is around april- october. During winter months the tracks may be very slippery due to snow and ice and can make it dangerous, but if you have the correct materials needed, it could work fine.

over 5,202 people have hiked up Preikestolen on the same day the prime minister. the summer record was set on July 17 when there was over 5,342 people who took a hike up. 

the average daily is 3,410 visitors on weekdays.


the great rise has meant a lot for the first aid in Norway. in the beginning of July the year there had been more rescue  functioning at Preikestolen than during the whole of last year.
