 Holmenkollen

Holmenkollen is the hill you can see on the north-western side of Oslo.

To be able to get there it takes almost 20-30 minutes to get up there from the city center.

Holmenkollen area is a getaway to Nordmarka, which is one of the most popular recreational areas

in the city of Oslo. Holmenkollen has existed for around 120 years and it did not look like this 120

years ago. Ever since the 1800s, Holmenkollen has been

used for Norwegian ski enthusiasts every winter with a huge crowd.

There are different types of skiing used for this event: cross country, alpine, or jumping types.

It is one of the most popular places in Norway. It was really popular from the start until this day

today, Because of their popularity they have developed the ski area in Holmenkollen.

Today it has turned into the most used area for winter sports, also talking about the ski festival

which also can be called the second national day of Norway.

The first-ever ski jumping competition in Holmenkollen took place in 1892 with a crowd of over

12,000 people watching. The competition was based on cross country in 18 kilometers jump the next day.

The first big skiing competition was held in Oslo(Ullern) called the husebrynnet from 1879 to 1891. in the middle

of this Holmenkollen opened for the first time in 1887. Around the area of holmenkolltoppen, there weren't

any houses.

that expanded and develop the idea of building a bigger center. in 1879 the competition of husebrynnet had to

get canceled because of the lack of snow that was there instead, they moved it to ullbakken at the frognersenteret.

This is a picture of how Holmenkollen developed throughout the years.

For the first years it was nothing more than a normal hill with a takeoff ramp built from

snow and twigs. As almost 10 years passed in the 1900s and the sport became much  more popular, the in run where the skiers start their descent was slowly built taller  with wooden

scaffolding. Which is a type of wooden plank which allowed the skiers to jump even further. As it got more and more popular throughout the years they invested more money on it.  Holmenkollen har their own day which is

called Holmenkollen day which is in the month of march.

Oslo was awarded the winter olympics in 1952, the area then was improved and they made it much taller which then had to include an elevator for the athletes to be able to get to the top. The bottom of the hill was made deeper and you make a greater jump length. The arena became very popular which made the royal family and the judges. The olympic ski jumping competition drew between 120,000 and 150,000 watching in the audience. This is a record which is still not beten today.

As you stand on the top of the hill you are able to see most partes of Oslo with a beautiful view. Holmenkollen is mostly the experience of how it has developed and just the view of it. As the hill is so tall they have made an activity which is a zipline that you can take from the top to the bottom. Wonderful experience. More information under.
